full coverageWhat is an A.M. BEST score?

A.M. Best is an independent agency that gives a credit rating of insurance companies regarding their financial strength. It works very much like your credit score. However, A.M. Best regulates the  “credit score” for insurance companies.  An insurance company’s credit rating indicates its ability to pay policyholders’ claims. You want to select from a highly rated company to make sure you will not only get paid but are also offered their preferred rates to get you the best coverage,

Top-rated insurance companies have a real solid underwriting, which allows these companies to offer you a preferred rating more often than not. A preferred health rating is the best one you can get. That in turn brings your price down and gets you a lot better coverage. So it’s not so much of a gamble because you know they are going to be able to take care of your loved ones when they need it.

What Exactly is a Health Rating?

health rating

There are four main categories of health ratings and policies that insurance companies offer: a Preferred Plus,  Preferred, a Standard Plus (Graded)  and Standard (Guaranteed Issue) rating. Depending on your rating it will affect the type and cost of your insurance policy. Your health rating is your ” Health Credit Score”. It operates very similarly to a credit score when you are looking to purchase an automobile. The better your credit score the lower you pay and the better deals are available.

The ideal rating is a Preferred Health Rating. That’s the best you can get. It’s an above-average health rating. As you can see,  it’s very important to get the highest rate possible. So you need to deal with an agency insurance broker like Protect With Insurance to help you get that higher health score despite some negative health issues.

If you have a severe health condition a good insurance agency can try to mitigate the negative effects.

So the lower your health credit score is the more you pay for less coverage. You will still get full whole life coverage but it may not have all the bells and whistles. The lowest health score known as a Standard rating limits you to the Guaranteed Issue policy level. By its name, that may sound great since it’s guaranteed but it comes with a lot of restrictions. The good news is that no matter what your health score is we can find coverage for you. Not all agencies can.

One of the main restrictions with a Graded and a Guaranteed Issue policy is that they both have some type of a two-year waiting period.

What is a Guaranteed Life Insurance Policy?

Guaranteed Issue Life insurance is a type of whole life insurance policy that does not require you to answer health questions, undergo a medical exam, or allow an insurance company to review your medical and prescription records. You may also see it referred to as “no questions life insurance”. However, this type of insurance comes with a two-year waiting period. If you die during the waiting period, your beneficiaries will not receive the policy’s death benefit.

What is a Graded Life Policy?

A Graded Life Insurance policy is a type of guaranteed whole issue life insurance that provides for a graded benefit during the first several years of coverage. A graded benefit policy is one that pays a lower amount if death occurs during the first few years after the policy is purchased. It is a modified type of life insurance whose annual premiums increase but the amount of insurance stays the same for usually a two year period.  The purpose is to make the initial payments more affordable.

How Does Asthma Affect My Health Score?

First of all, asthma is a real common ailment. There are a lot of people with asthma breathing problems. The good news is you can still get a preferred health rating even with severe asthma.

What If You Have COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, cough, mucus (sputum) production and wheezing. It’s typically caused by long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter, most often from cigarette smoke. People with COPD are at increased risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer and a variety of other conditions.

However if you have COPD along with your asthma things change dramatically. Although COPD is moderately common the insurance companies rate you according to the medicines you are prescribed. If your medicine is specific for COPD, the insurance company will most likely lower your health score to the Graded Level. If you’re not sure, Google your medication and it should tell you if your medication is a COPD type of dedicated prescription. Most insurance companies do their ratings with automated parameters on a computer like that in order to determine if you are going to be approved or declined.

If you’re using an oxygen concentrator for breathing and we’re not talking about a C-PAP device which is an extremely common event for sleep apnea.  However, if you have a prescription for an oxygen concentrator or tanks that you wheel around the house you will be put in the lower Guaranteed Issue.

There are some exceptions.  Occasionally we have been able to get a preferred health rating for someone with COPD  but typically your expectations should be that you will be given a Graded Life insurance policy.

How Does an Irregular Heart Rhythm Affect My Health Score?

Heart rhythms

The majority of irregular heart rhythm issues can possibly still qualify you a full coverage preferred health rating. This includes heart murmurs and other irregular heartbeat rhythm issues. The exception to the rule would be if you have congestive heart failure. That would place you with a Guaranteed Issue policy.

However if you have been diagnosed with angina you can still get a preferred health rating as long as you’ve had angina for at least a year now.

What About Blood Thinners?

Blood thinners   are medicines that help blood flow smoothly through your veins and arteries. They also keep blood clots from forming or getting bigger. They’re used to treat some types of heart disease and heart defects, and other conditions that could raise your risk of getting dangerous clots.

Usually blood thinners are not a problem. if you’ve been taking them for at least a year. Then you’re going to be in good shape to get a preferred health rating, so no problems there. But if you’ve have connected heart issues, that may be a problem.

If you’ve had a heart attack or a stroke, or any heart surgeries and other heart problems within the last year, then you’re will have to go to a guaranteed issue.

We recommend to clients in that situation to start with the full coverage guaranteed issue policy.  After a year from the point where you’ve had your problem, you can contact us and we will reassess your health rating. As long as no other issues have come up in that time, that would impact your policy, then, we go ahead and we change you into a standard or preferred health rating policy and it’s worthwhile to do that. Your price will drop and your policy quality will increase.

How Does Hepatitis C Impact My Health Score?

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that causes liver inflammation, sometimes leading to serious liver damage. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) spreads through contaminated blood. Until recently, hepatitis C treatment required weekly injections and oral medications that many HCV-infected people couldn’t take because of other health problems or unacceptable side effects. That’s changing. Today, chronic HCV is usually curable with oral medications taken every day for two to six months.

Whether your Hepatitis C  is active or even cured, there are a lot of carriers out there that will decline you.
